The Chartfield is a charming beach side B & B. Our bedroom was on the top floor with a small deck that overlooked the Kalk Bay Harbor and town (pictured right). It was perfect, we highly recommend it. Breakfast in the morning was also very pleasant. Kalk Bay is one of several friendly beach towns along the Easter coast of Cape Horn, the Southern peninsula of SA.
Sunday was spent driving down the Eastern coast through beach towns until we arrived at the Cape of Good Hope. All along the way there were signs to warn us about Baboons! The Cape o
f Good Hope is a nature reserve that takes up the whole tip of the peninsula made up of trails, a few roads, and lots of low lying
shrubbery. It is one of the most southern points in Africa. There i
s a small mountainy cliff on the point that Justin climbed up to get a picture of the southern coast (pictured left).
The rest of the afternoon we explored Simon's Town, where we had lunch overlooking the water. Justin spotted a seal playing in the small harbor while we were finishing up our lunch. I ran down the pier to see if I could get a picture of him. After giving up, the big guy appeared again. He actually seemed to be showing off for the camera. He spun around here and there under the water, poking his head out to look at me. He then lept out of the water and onto the stone steps that came up the pier, nearly landing on a couple of kids that yelled and jumped away. He hung out there for a bit before heading back into the water.
We had ice cream and then headed back up to Kalk Bay to do some shopping in town. The shops were cute and the town is friendly, with a few eclectic coffee shops and bars. We relaxed for a bit on our deck before we headed out to dinner at the Brass Bell, a highly recommended restaurant and bar on the water. We had a yummy dinner there then grabbed a few drinks at a neighboring bar.
We turned in around 11pm, we had to get up early the next day to get Bec to the airport. Justin and I will continue to drive East along the coast towards Port Elizabeth (the town the Rebecca is staying in), visiting more fun places as we go.
