After breakfast we searched for some last minute gifts, then headed across the street to the beach! Now, since Africa is heading into winter, it was a bit chilly on the beach, still warm in the sun, but just a bit colder than we would have liked. It was super windy and we got sand blasted every couple of minutes. The water was super cold but Justin and one of Bec's friends jumped in anyway.
We got hungry mid afternoon and decided to call it a day. We then drove onto Bec's campus to walk around a bit and grab a late lunch at one of the restaurants on campus. Then we just hung out in Bec's room and had a few drinks until dinner time! Justin and I went out to dinner at a really yummy restaurant called Ginger, while Bec and her friends had a dinner for their inter study program. We will meet up with them later on.
At this point we are both pretty tired, I think all the running around has finally caught up to us. We are mostly packed already for our return trip to the States tomorrow. We are sad to leave and not looking forward to the 14+ hours on the airplane. yuck! We fly out of Port Elizabeth around 1pm SA time, we have a 5 hour layover in Johannesburg, then we fly to London, with a short layover, and eventually back to JFK. We are both looking forward to slumping down on my parents' couch on Sunday and staring blankly at the TV.
Happy early mothers day moms!
This may be our last blog since we are heading home tomorrow. I would say overall our trip has been a tremendous success. We ate lots of food and had tons of fun and saw many many awesome things. Rebecca and I both found out that we really like olives, or at least Kalamata olives... the black and green ones are not as good. Justin loves ostrich and I've had grilled prawns for probably 4 of my meals here. I am going to miss those little suckers. Service is slow here, there isn't a whole lot of concern for customer service. However, the people are all extremely friendly, nice and polite. Strangers are twice as friendly here as they are in general in the states, and the local people don't seem to be that bothered by tourists.
The country is gearing up for the world cup, but the general feeling here is that they won't get as much tourism as they had initially thought they would. A lot of the shop keepers and business owners are worried about it because a lot of them invested heavily into their own businesses and shops to prepare for the surge of tourists. Same with the overall economy here too, there is a ton of road work going on, which we are guessing is to help prepare for the world cup.
Okay that is it! Might add a few thoughts during some layovers on the way back. Thanks for reading! See you all soon.
Sarah & Justin
