National Underground

So even though we live in New York City, we live in South Harlem... so traveling all the way down to the East Village on a Thursday night is concidered "travel" for me. We went to go see our friend Pete play an accoustic show with his friend Justin at National Underground on Houston. The National Underground's main bar area is a small-ish, intimate spot. The bar is at the front and the small stage is at the back. There isn't much room, but the music easily fills the place. I am not one to venture out many evenings on a "school night" but we made a special exception for Petey, and boy were we glad we did!

After Petey played the next act was Chris Barron of the Spin Doctors, playing with a side band called The Time Bandits. Chris was great and even played a few Spin Doctor favorites like "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong." To our great surprise and delight, a few songs in Barron announced "I'd like to welcome my good friend John Popper to the stage!" And sure enough, in the flesh, equipped with a few harmonicas, was John Popper from Blues Traveler. He played a few songs with The Time Bandits and ripped a few fabulous strings on the harmonica. I was able to catch a quick video, the image quality isn't great, but the sound is worth it!

It was a late night for us, but well worth the tired eyes and headache this morning! National Underground made an excellent venue for this spontaneous star struck night. They even passed around free sliders!
