First Day with Bec

Our initial plan was to hike Lions Head Mountain, the hike is shorter and supposed to be less difficult than Table Mountain. We were talking to Bec a bit, she did not get to the top of Table Mountain during her last trip to Cape Town since she is deathly afraid of heights. The cable car was very out of the question for her. However, we all decided it would be a royal shame if she did not get to the top of the mountain. With this said, we decided to hike up Table Mountain instead of Lions Head.

Holy Cow. The hike took us about 2.5 hours in the hot sun. We chose to hike through the Gorge because we were told it is the easiest hike. I came to find out just how out of shape I am. 90% of the hike are roughly place stones stairs, you are hiking vertically almost the entire time. It was beautiful and fairly well kept however, it was HARD. Even still, we very much enjoyed it and felt quite a feat of accomplishment by the time we hit the top. Rebecca did extremely well hiking up (as long as she didn't look up or down). We moved pretty slowly and Justin was a trooper- being very patient with us. We talked to several hikers going up and down the same path. The other hikers came from all over the world, lots of interesting people. We spent most of the hike with a couple from Zimbabwe that was accompanied by their 15 year old daughter and a friend from South Africa. They were extremely pleasant. They were also moving fairly slowly, but we were good distractions for each other.

We were so exhausted by the time we got to the top that we decided we would take the cable car down which instantly made Bec's stomach turn over. I had brought with me a sleeping mask (the kind you put over your eyes to block out the light when you are sleeping. We made Rebecca wear this as we shuffled her, blindfolded, arm in arm into the cable car and made her sit down in the center. We tried to distract her by talking about random things until the ride was over. She did so well! The mission was a success and Rebecca was able to experience one of the most incredible parts of South Africa. So glad we did it!

Tired and worn out, but feeling quite proud of ourselves, we headed back to the hotel to shower before we headed out for some lunch and shopping around the center of Cape Town.
